📖 User manual, details & specifications

The pools competition software explained from A to Z: every setting, every button, every rule.

📥 Import a list from a file (Notepad / Word / Excel)
At the top of the list, two buttons: 📄 Template (downloads a file .txt of example, already commented, to fill in) and 📥 Import (loads your file and fills the list automatically).
Format: one team per line — Team name; City/Club; Player1 + Player2 (only the name is required, the rest is optional).
Word → "Save as → Plain text (.txt)". Excel → "Save as → CSV". The separator (;, comma or tab) is detected automatically; empty lines and those starting with # are ignored.

1. What is this tool for?

It is a complete pools competition manager : it draws the pools of 4, manages all the matches (with the classic winners / losers / playoff system), calculates the standings, then automatically continues on one or more final single-elimination brackets (A, B, C) up to the winners. Ideal for running a competition from start to finish on a single screen, with printing and backup.

2. Tournament settings

SettingRole
Club / competitionThe name shown in the header of printouts and PDFs.
DateThe competition date (automatically filled with today's date).
Number of teamsFrom 4 to 332 teams (or players in head-to-head).
FormationHead-to-head, Doublette or Triplette — changes the number of players to enter per team.
Bracket after the poolsThen AB (2 brackets) or Then ABC (3 brackets) — see section 8.

3. Update / Draw the pools

1
UPDATE : applies the number of teams and rebuilds the pools in order (pool 1 = teams 1-2-3-4, etc.).
2
DRAW THE POOLS : performs a random draw of the pools (random order of teams).
💡 The pools are formed in groups of 4. If a small number remains, the last pool may have 3.

4. The team list

In the left column, each card lets you enter the team / captain name, the city / club and the player names (the number of player fields adapts to the formation). Everything is optional.

5. The 4 tabs

  • Groups : the match sheets for each pool, with score entry and statistics.
  • Pools standings : the detailed standings of each pool (wins, points for/against, qualification).
  • A / B / C brackets : the final single-elimination trees built with the qualifiers.
  • Full grid : a table view of the whole competition.

6. How a pool unfolds (4 teams)

The software follows the official 4-team pool system:

  • 1st round : 2 matches (teams 1-2 and 3-4).
  • 2e winners round : the two winners face off → the winner is qualified 1stst.
  • 2e losers round : the two losers face off → the loser is eliminated from the pool.
  • Playoff : the loser of the winners' match against the winner of the losers' match → the winner is qualified 2nde.

The matches of the following rounds appear automatically as soon as the previous matches are entered.

7. Enter scores (click on the winner)

1
Click on thewinning team (its number or its score box): it automatically gets 13.
2
A small window opens with the numbers 0 to 12 : choose the loser's score. Both scores fill in at once.

The winning team turns green. You can also type the scores directly on the keyboard.

8. Qualification & AB / ABC modes

Each pool qualifies 2 teams (the 1stst and the 2nde) to the A bracket. The others are distributed according to the chosen mode:

ModeDistribution
Then ABA = the 2 qualifiers from each pool · B = all the other teams (consolation).
Then ABCA = the 2 qualifiers · B = the 3rdth · C = the 4thth (and the eliminated from the 1stst round of the A/B brackets).

9. The final A / B / C brackets

  • They are single-elimination trees automatically fed by the pool qualifiers.
  • The rounds are named automatically: Round of 32, Round of 16, Round of 8, quarters, semi-finals, final.
  • Score entry works as in the pools (click on the winner).
  • At the end, a banner “🏆 Winner Competition A / B / C” is displayed (with a blinking effect).

10. Standings & full grid

The tab Pools standings sorts each pool by wins, then point difference, then points scored. The tab Full grid gives an exportable overview.

11. Large screen mode

The button LARGE SCREEN MODE switches to full screen display (ideal for projecting during the competition). A toolbar offers several views:

  • 100% live matches : shows only the unfinished pools + the ongoing bracket matches.
  • Pool matches : compact display of all the pools.
  • Display by round : choose the round to display (1stst round, 2nde winners, 2nde losers, playoff, to competition).
  • A / B / C bracket : displays a final tree in large size.
  • Print this page : captures the displayed view as PDF.

12. Save & resume

The button SAVE saves the competition in this browser. When the page is reopened, the competition is reloaded automatically (teams, scores, brackets).

13. Export / Import the backup

  • EXPORT BACKUP : downloads a file .json full (to transfer to another PC or to archive).
  • IMPORT BACKUP : reloads a file .json previously exported.

14. Export PDF & Print

  • EXPORT PDF : generates a summary PDF of the competition.
  • PRINT : launches printing of the current view, A4 landscape layout, black on white (economical on ink).

15. Clear results

The button CLEAR RESULTS clears all scores (after confirmation) while keeping the teams and the pools, to start entering again.

16. Frequently asked questions

I closed the page, did I lose everything?

No, if you had clicked SAVE : the competition reloads itself. For safety, regularly export the file .json.

How many teams at most?

Up to 332 teams (or players in head-to-head).

What's the difference between AB and ABC?

AB = 2 brackets (main + consolation). ABC = 3 brackets, to give more games to teams eliminated early.

Is it really free?

Yes, 100% free, offered by Paquita from petanqueland.fr. 🎯
