Petanque FAQ

20 Q/A
Show the 20 questions / answers Fold Out
1.
What is the normal distance for the jack?

In competition, the goal is thrown between 6 and 10 meters from the circle.

2.
How many boules per player?

In triplet, each player plays 2 balls. In doublets and head-to-head, each player plays 3 balls.

3.
Who plays first in an end?

The team that won the previous lead throws the goal and plays the first ball of the next lead.

4.
Can you put a foot outside the circle?

No. Both feet should stay inside the circle and in contact with the ground until the ball touches the ground.

5.
How long do you have to play a boule?

The classic delay is one minute from the moment the player has the field and goal to play.

6.
How do you know which team holds the point?

The team that has the ball closest to the goal holds the point. If it is too tight, we measure.

7.
Can you measure at any time?

We measure especially when the situation is contested or too close to the eye. The measurement must remain neutral and clean.

8.
Does a boule that leaves the court still count?

No. A ball declared void no longer counts and must be removed from the game according to the cases provided for by the regulations.

9.
What if the jack is moved?

The regulation distinguishes several situations: valid goal, void goal or leads to replay.

10.
Can you rub out a mark on the ground?

Not if it alters a mark useful in judging a ball or goal.

11.
What is the difference between pointing and shooting?

Pointer is to place your ball near the goal. Shooting consists of hitting an opponent's ball to remove it.

12.
Do you have to shoot hard to shoot well?

No. A good shot depends mainly on the accuracy, the gesture and the point of fall.

13.
Does terrain really change tactics?

Yes. A rolling, pierced, hard or gravelled terrain requires adapting the height, speed and choice between point and shot.

14.
Can we talk while the opponent is playing?

We must avoid any discomfort. Any speech, noise or attitude that intentionally disturbs the player may be sanctioned.

15.
What is the purpose of the rules when playing for leisure?

To avoid arguments. Even with friends, knowing the basics makes the games smoother and fairer.

16.
Can a team play twice in a row?

Yes if she still holds the point. The team that does not hold the point must continue to play until it is retaken or no longer have balls.

17.
When should we focus on the point rather than shooting?

When the situation requires building, closing a line or laying a ball that is difficult to take back cleanly.

18.
How to progress quickly in pétanque?

By working on the repeatable bases: regularity, reading of leads, simple choice, routine and knowledge of the field.

19.
How do you choose your pétanque boules?

You choose according to your hand, position, touch, diameter, weight and balance.

20.
Where can you find clear explanations of the rules?

On PetanqueLand, the rules page explained includes concrete cases, frequent questions and the most common errors.

Mini Beginner's Guide

20 simple and useful tips to play better without complicating your life

20 tips
Expand the 20 tips Fold Out
1. Commence par la régularité

Before looking for the spectacular shot, work on the simple, calm and repeatable ball.

2. Observe le terrain avant de jouer

The terrain, gravel and hard areas change everything on the trajectory.

3. Apprends le règlement utile

Measurement, circle, playing time and exit ball: a few bases avoid a lot of arguments.

4. Lis les mènes avant de tirer fort

The right choice is often worth more than an ambitious gesture made at the wrong time.

5. Garde une routine simple

The same placement, the same breathing and the same rhythm make the gesture more stable.

6. Joue ton vrai pourcentage

Choose the shot that you really succeed, not the one that would be beautiful if everything went perfectly.

7. Regarde aussi les boules adverses

The point is not only read at the goal: we must also see the obstacles, the doors and the recoveries.

8. Adapte ta hauteur de boule

Depending on the terrain, the same speed is not enough. The height often changes the ball holding.

9. Ne confonds pas vitesse et précipitation

Playing fast does not require you to throw yourself away. We can remain simple while remaining lucid.

10. Mesure proprement quand c est serré

When the eye is no longer enough, a calm and clear measure is better than a heated debate.

11. Parle simple avec ton partenaire

A clear, short and shared instruction helps more than a big speech on the edge of the circle.

12. Travaille le point avant le geste rare

The progression often comes from a solid foundation before coming from high-risk shots.

13. Change un seul paramètre à la fois

If you change everything together, you'll never know what's driving your throw forward.

14. Observe les zones qui tiennent

Identify the areas of the field that brake, wear or break the ball to play better.

15. Accepte de rejouer sobre

A champion does not always look for a miracle. He often comes back to the right shot.

16. Évite les gestes parasites

The cleaner your movement, the less technical noise you add to your throw.

17. Lis le score avant de choisir

The right shot at 0-0 is not always the right one at 11-11. The score changes the priority.

18. Reste neutre après une mauvaise boule

The missed shot must not contaminate the next one. Quickly return to the present and the field.

19. Choisis des objectifs concrets

It is better to hit 10 balls on a specific area than to do a blurred session without a marker.

20. Termine chaque séance par les bases

Finishing with a few simple balls helps anchor confidence and good benchmarks.
