In recent weeks, one topic keeps coming up at the edge of the courts: ground markings.

A small line drawn with the foot.
A displaced pebble.
A leaf “forgotten” right next to the circle.

Nothing spectacular. And yet, it gets people talking.

🎯 What are we talking about exactly?

It isn’t always about clear or visible marks.
Often, they’re micro-references:

– a pebble put back after an end
– a mark made with the tip of the shoe
– a natural element slightly moved
– a lingering look at a specific spot on the court

Taken separately, it seems harmless.
But strung together, it starts to look like a habit.

In official competition, any deliberate modification of the court is forbidden.

This includes:

• deliberately marking a reference point
• moving elements to create an aiming point
• preparing a specific area before a shoot or a point

Even when it’s “minor”.

In practice, many referees turn a blind eye as long as it stays discreet…
but some are starting to be much stricter.

Several possible reasons:

👉 the influence of videos and social media
👉 the search for consistency

We’re also seeing a new generation of very “methodical” players emerge, sometimes inspired by elite sport.

It’s more:

Are we still playing “by the feel of the court”?
Or are we trying to control everything?

For some, these references are reassuring.
For others, it takes the soul out of the game.
