📖 User manual & detailed features

The blank bracket generator to print, explained from A to Z: every option, every button.

1. What is this tool for?

This generator creates a blank pétanque competition bracket, ready to print on A4 and to fill in by hand on the day of the competition. No online score entry: you get nice sheets with empty boxes (names, scores) that you fill in with a pen.

2. Bracket type

The menu Bracket type offers three modes:

  • Direct knockout (tree) : a classic tree where each winner moves up a round, until the final winner.
  • Pools (pool matches) : pool sheets (groups of 4, sometimes 3) with their matches to note.
  • Pools + final bracket : the pool sheets the more a final tree for the qualifiers (2 per pool).

3. Number of teams (or players)

Enter the number of participants, from 4 to 128. The field label adapts: « Number of players » in tête-à-tête, « Number of teams » otherwise.

💡 In direct knockout, if your number isn't a power of 2 (8, 16, 32, 64, 128), the bracket is rounded up to the next format and the extra boxes stay empty (left free or to handle byes by hand).

4. Formation (lines per box)

The menu Formation determines the number of writing lines in each team box :

FormationLines per box
Singles1 line (1 player)
Doubles2 lines (2 players)
Triples3 lines (3 players)

So each box offers just enough space to write the team's names.

5. Matches per sheet

For large brackets, a round can contain a lot of matches (e.g. 64 matches in the 1stst round for 128 teams). The field Matches per sheet defines how many matches to print per A4 page, so that everything stays large and legible. Each round is split across several sheets if needed (« sheet 1/8 », « 2/8 »…).

✅ The ideal value is filled in automatically according to the formation: 16 in tête-à-tête, 11 in doublette, 9 in triplette. You can adjust it (from 2 to 24).

6. Score boxes

The checkbox Score boxes adds a small box to the right of each team to note the match score. Uncheck it if you only want the names.

7. Consolation (losers' bracket)

In tournament only, the box Add a consolation bracket (losers) generates a second bracket for the eliminated teams, to offer them a repechage tournament.

8. Competition name, date, club

These three fields (Competition name, Date, Club / Venue) appear in the header of each printed sheet. They are optional.

9. Generate the bracket (preview)

The button GENERATE THE BRACKET displays an on-screen preview of the bracket (connected tree or pools). It's a control visual; the print uses a separate optimised A4 layout.

10. Download as PDF (A4)

The button DOWNLOAD AS PDF (A4) creates a multi-page PDF file (one to several sheets per round) and downloads it. Ideal to archive it or print it later.

11. Print

The button PRINT opens the same clean PDF directly in the print window — without without the browser's unsightly headers/footers. Black and white output, economical on ink.

12. The waiting screen (large brackets)

Creating the PDF turns each A4 sheet into an image, one by one. For a very large bracket (up to 128 teams), it can take 2 to 4 minutes. An animated waiting screen with a progress bar (« Sheet 3 / 14 ») is displayed during this time — don't close the page.

13. Understanding the printed bracket (direct knockout)

  • Each box = a team ; a match = two boxes linked by « VS ».
  • The rounds are named automatically: Round of 128, round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final, then the box 🏆 Winner.
  • You carry over by hand the winner of each match into the box of the next round.

14. Understanding the pool sheets

  • The participants are split into pools of 4 (or 3 if needed), numbered.
  • Each pool has its match grid to fill in: 1st round, winners' match, losers' match, play-off.
  • In « Pools + final bracket » mode, a final tree hosts the 2 qualifiers from each pool.

15. Printing tips

  • Everything is black and white to save ink.
  • Format A4 portrait ; each sheet is designed to stay legible.
  • For a large competition, adjust « Matches per sheet » if you want even bigger boxes (lower value).

16. Frequently asked questions

Does the bracket record the scores?

No: it's a blank bracket to fill in by hand. To manage scores on screen, use Paquita's other competition tools.

How many teams at most?

Up to 128 in direct knockout, and as many pools as needed in pools mode.

PDF generation is slow, is that normal?

For very large brackets, yes (2 to 4 min) — that's the time to turn each sheet into a high-quality image. The waiting screen keeps you informed.
